Its geological position, rich commercial exchanges and its fertile territory
made Catania famous and attracted poets, cultured persons and merchants. In the
15th century the first Italic University of the region was established. Its most
important monuments are:
- The Greek Theatre, built during the Roman Empire located near the Roman Forum
and thermal baths
- The Ursino Castle, built by Federico II and today home to Civic Museum
- The Duomo of Saint Agata, built in 1093 hosts sculptures dedicated to Vincenzo
