Its historic origins date back to 735 a.C. when a group of colonies disembarked
at Capo Schisò and founded the first Greek colonies in Sicily, known as Naxos.
It achieved a symbolic importance thanks to its altar dedicated to Apollo Archegetes

developed economic importance thanks to its abundance of fish, wrought iron, manufacturing
of vases and tiles, agriculture, and extraction of essences from citrus plants
for use in distilled beverages.
